Exploring provocation as a research method in the social sciences

Luci Pangrazio has a new article in International Journal of Social Research Methodology titled ‘Exploring provocation as a research method in the social sciences‘. The methodological paper outlines the use of provocative, obtrusive approaches to social research, where the researcher interrupts participants’ lives as a means of illuminating and drawing attention to complex social issues. This contrasts with the tendency in social research to use non-obtrusive methods which aim to generate ‘natural’ or ‘authentic’ data. The paper derives from Luci’s research on the digital lives of young people, where she used a range of arts-based methods to provoke participants to detail, represent and deconstruct their online practices.
