Carlo Perrotta and Neil Selwyn have a new article published on AI and education. Titled, “Deep learning goes to school: toward a relational understanding of AI in education”, the paper examines how data scientists work to add AI elements to online learning systems. Using a case study approach, the paper highlights various (problematic) issues in the development of AIED – including flawed data, partially incomprehensible computational methods, narrow forms of educational’ knowledge, and reductionist discourses of data science with evident economic ramifications.
