Luci Pangrazio and Neil Selwyn have a new article just published in New Media & Society – titled “‘Personal data literacies’: A critical literacies approach to enhancing understandings of personal digital data“. The article develops a framework for understanding how people can engage with the personal data that is implicit in their uses of digital technology. Specifically, the article proposes a framework of ‘Personal Data Literacies’ that distinguishes five significant domains: (1) Data Identification, (2) Data Understandings, (3) Data Reflexivity, (4) Data Uses, and (5) Data Tactics. In the wake of Cambridge Analytica and the Edward Snowden revelations, we argue that this is an increasingly important area of digital literacy that needs to be promoted throughout society.
