Listen to Neil Selwyn’s interview with Thomas Hillman (University of Gothenburg) about his fascinating research on how people learn through large online platforms. Tom discusses his recent studies of Facebook teacher groups, citizen science platforms on Zooniverse and people learning manual skills from instructional videos on YouTube.
We consider how all these activities offer valuable insights into the ways in which learning takes place, and the growing significance of the internet as an informal educational space.Tom also reflects on what education research might learn from his previous profession of being an industrial designer.
Tom will be a visiting scholar with the DER Group at Monash in November 2019.
