DER member Tracii Ryan is one of the authors of a new journal article published in Cyberpsychology: Journal of Psychosocial Research on Cyberspace. The article, which is titled “Social comparison orientation mediates the relationship between neuroticism and passive Facebook use“, was co-authored with colleagues from the University of Tartu in Estonia, the University of Toledo in the USA, and the University of the West of Scotland in the UK.

The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between passive Facebook use, neuroticism, and social comparison orientation (SCO), and explore whether SCO mediates the potential relationship between neuroticism and passive Facebook use. The results revealed positive correlations between passive Facebook use, neuroticism, and SCO. In addition, SCO mediated the relationship between neuroticism and passive Facebook use. These findings suggest that people higher in neuroticism are more prone to social comparison, which is associated with passive Facebook use.
